
This course is intended to introduce the musicians (performers and composers) to Arabic music Maqams (or Arabic modes), rhythm cycles, theory, forms, performance techniques, instruments, and repertoire of Arabic music, with music analysis and audio/video examples.
All the material explained in the course will be available for the enrolled students as pdf files and audio files for their reference.
The course will be divided into 8 sessions of 60 min each, planned as follows:
Session 01: Introduction to Arabic music covering a brief history, terminology, Arabic music Alphabet, and structures (الهيكليات والاجناس).
Session 02: The concept of the Arabic modality: what is a Maqam (مقام)? the four aspects of studying Maqamat, and the families of “Rast – رست” and “Bayati – بياتي”
Session 03: The families of “Sikah – سيكاه”, “Irak – عراق”, “Ajam – عجم” and “Nahawand – نهاوند”
Session 04: The families of “Kurd – كرد”, “Hijaz – حجاز”, and “Nakriz – نكريز”
Session 05: Arabic traditional rhythms: the cycles of 2-8 beats per measure
Session 06: Arabic traditional rhythms: the cycles of 9 beats per measure and above
Session 07: Arabic traditional forms and concept of Waslah (الوصلة), Arabic music composed forms
Session 08: Arabic improvisation: Taqassim (تقاسيم) and Irtijal (ارتجال), Arabic music Improvised forms
