About the piece

This song cycle for soprano and piano is based on a text by the Lebanese poet Said Aqel, taken from the Diwan titled “خُماسيّات الصّبا” (Houmasiyètouṣ -ṣaba).

The cycle consists of five art-songs and five short piano poems.

They can be played in any order decided by the performers, but the set should alternate between the art-song and the piano poem, and the first piece must be a piano poem.

إعتبْ على الوجودْ 

قُلْ: لِمْ أَرَدْتَني يدا

تَبْخَلُ بَعْدَ جودْ؟

لِوخزِ شوكِها اعتدى

إعتبْ على الورودْ

لو أنّني الغمامُ لا أمطرْ

أثْلُجُ، أكسوها الرّبى لؤلؤا…

إلّا بما يَفْتِنُ لنْ أدفأَ!

ألخيرُ؟ – ضِعْ في الخَبَرِ المُسْكِرْ؟ –

أغنى من الآخِذِهِ، مَنْ رأى…

شجرةُ الصدى

كان لها ما كانْ…

وَوَجِعَ النّدى!

مُرَّ بها غدا

ونسِّها النّسيانْ

تسألُ ما الفنْ

باعدْ عن العُلَبْ

أجملُ ما انكتبْ

السّيفُ إنْ رنْ

والسّيفُ إنْ غلبْ

أنتَ يا غِنى،

مثلما الضّنى

نُزهةٌ في الآهْ

أنا مَنْ أنا؟…

نُزهةٌ في اللهْ!
