The International Society for Ekmelic Music was founded in 1981 by Franz Richter Herf and Rolf Maedel and is based in Salzburg. Since 2015, Agustín Castilla-Ávila has chaired the biennial symposium “Microtones: Small is Beautiful”. The title “Microtones: Small is Beautiful”, which the International Society for Ekmelic Music uses for their symposium, is a quote from the Salzburg-born philosopher and Alternative Nobel Prize winner Leopold Kohr.

“From Heterophony to Polyphony – An Approach to Harmonize the Arabic Maqam” was the title of my presentation at the symposium on June 28th. The presentation will be documented in an article to be published in the book “Mikrotöne: Small is Beautiful Vol. 5” at Mackingerverlag in Austria.
since my approach is still under development, I will delay the publishing of any materials related to this topic till after the publishing of my book titled ” From Horizontal to Vertical Polyphony – an approach to Harmonize the Arabic Maqam”, in which I will discuss the whole process with details.
